About us
The Story Behind Kali Clay Studios 🏺✨
Kali Clay Studios was born out of a deep love for pottery, creativity, and the grounding nature of working with clay. It started as a passion project—a way to explore the art of wheel throwing and hand-building, but it quickly grew into something much bigger.
At first, it was just about personal practice, shaping clay in a quiet space, discovering the meditative rhythm of centering, pulling, and forming vessels. But soon, the joy of creating with clay turned into a desire to share the experience with others.
What began as small, casual sessions with friends quickly turned into structured classes, with more people eager to learn. As demand grew, the idea of a dedicated space for pottery—where people could slow down, get their hands dirty, and create something meaningful—became a reality.
Why ‘Kali’ Clay Studios?
The name Kali holds a deep significance. Inspired by Kali, the goddess of transformation and creation, it represents strength, creativity, and embracing the messy, beautiful process of making something new. Just like clay, life is about shaping, refining, and firing ourselves into something stronger.
From humble beginnings teaching in a home studio, Kali Clay Studios has now grown into a welcoming space for people of all skill levels to explore pottery, express themselves, and experience the therapeutic nature of working with clay. Whether it’s beginners learning to center their first lump of clay, kids discovering the joy of sculpting, or seasoned potters refining their craft—this studio is built on community, creativity, and the belief that everyone has an artist within them.

Meet the Maker
Chitrakshi “Bobby” Garrett
Hi! I’m Chitrakshi —founder of Kali Clay Studios. I’m a chef-turned-software-engineer, and by night… a full-blown potter with clay under my nails and joy in my heart.
My journey with pottery began as a creative outlet, something grounding and soulful. Over time, it turned into a passion I couldn’t keep to myself. I now spend my evenings making mugs, bowls, and vases, and teaching others to feel the same magic I felt when I first touched the wheel.
I've lived in New Zealand for over 11 years, and this place—especially the Naki—feels like home. With the support of my amazing family, I've built this cozy garage studio in Stratford where I get to share the art of clay with our wonderful community.
Whether you're here to learn, relax, or get your hands dirty for the first time, welcome to Kali Clay Studios. I can't wait to meet you.

What makes Kali Clay Studios unique?
🏺 What Makes Kali Clay Studios Unique?
At Kali Clay Studios, pottery is more than just a craft—it’s an experience. Here’s what sets us apart from other pottery studios:
1️⃣ A Warm, Relaxed, and Creative Space
Unlike large, commercial studios, Kali Clay Studios offers an intimate and cozy environment where students feel at home. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced potter, you'll find a welcoming space to learn, create, and unwind.
2️⃣ Small Class Sizes for Personal Attention
Many studios focus on big group classes, but at Kali Clay Studios, we keep our class sizes small (max 7 people per batch) so each student gets hands-on guidance and personalized instruction.
3️⃣ Beginner-Friendly & Step-By-Step Teaching Approach
We specialize in teaching absolute beginners. The 4-day Beginner’s Wheel Throwing Course is designed to help students slowly build their skills, ensuring that everyone walks away with something they’re proud of—without feeling overwhelmed.
4️⃣ Focus on the Full Pottery Journey – Not Just the Wheel
Most pottery places emphasize just throwing on the wheel, but we take students through the entire pottery-making process:
✔ Wheel Throwing – Learn to shape clay into cylinders, mugs, and bowls.
✔ Trimming & Refining – Get clean, professional-looking results.
✔ Glazing & Finishing – Make your pieces food-safe and beautiful.
✔ Kiln Firing Services – Fire your own pieces, even if you’re not in a class.
5️⃣ Flexible & Community-Focused Approach
✔ Weekend Classes Only – Perfect for people with busy work schedules.
✔ Swap Classes If Demand Changes – If more kids book, we can switch to a Kids’ Class instead of a Beginner’s Course.
✔ Casual & Friendly Atmosphere – No pressure, no rush—just good clay vibes.
6️⃣ Affordable & All-Inclusive Pricing
Unlike many studios that charge extra for materials and firing, Kali Clay Studios keeps pricing simple and transparent.
✔ All materials included – No hidden costs for clay or tools.
✔ Firing included – Most studios charge extra for glaze firing, but we include it in the class price.
✔ Apron Hire Available – For just $5, no need to worry about getting messy.
7️⃣ Inspired by the Art & Spirituality of Pottery
The studio name, Kali, is inspired by the Hindu goddess of transformation—representing creativity, destruction, and rebirth. Just like clay, we believe in shaping, refining, and embracing imperfections to create something beautiful.
8️⃣ More Than Just Classes—It’s a Community
At Kali Clay Studios, we believe pottery is about connection—with clay, creativity, and others. Students often return for more workshops, build friendships, and stay involved in the pottery-making journey.
